The 2013 Demand Study is currently in production and will be launched at the SSAA Summit in August 2013.

This Demand Study is the third study of this type and is the most comprehensive research completed into what drives people to use self storage in Australia and New Zealand. It comes at a time when the demand for self storage has been tested through a significant economic downturn. This study will help readers better understand what elements of the population are more likely to need self storage in the future and what their current perceptions of the industry are.

The study group for this years demand study was the largest ever, with a 17% increase in the number of users surveyed and more sites surveyed than previous years. The resulting document is a thorough and complex analysis of the public perception of self storage, from both users and non users, and what drives people to use self storage. Some of the comparison data over the last 2 demand study's in 2006 and 2008 show significant changes in public perception as the industry continues to grow.

Some of the Highlights from the 2010 Demand Study Include:

  • 5.7% of the general population respondents indicated that they are currently using self storage. This is an increase from 4.3% in 2008 and 3% in 2006
  • 50.7% of potential self storage customers would search for a facility using the internet.
  • 39.9% of self storage customers had stored at the same facility before - this is an increase from 20.4% in 2008.
  • 67.7% of existing customers earn close to or above the Australian Adult Ordinary Time Earnings level $64,683 per annum.
  • 87.2% of self storage customers indicated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their self storage facility.
