DIA Submission To The Australian Bureau Of Statistics

The DIA was recently invited by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to put forward a submission for a review of ANZSCO code 811512 - Drycleaning.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is continuing its comprehensive review of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) with a third round of public consultation. This was an opportunity for the DIA to make a significant impact by providing feedback on ANZSCO code 811512.

ANZSCO describes all occupations in the Australian and New Zealand labour markets. Your feedback will help inform and reshape educational pathways, skilled migration programs and strategies that support our workforce to remain adaptable and equipped with the right skills.

ANZSCO code 811512 currently has a Skill Level 5 attached to it which is hindering our industry's ability to access Government funding, training and inclusion on the Skilled Worker list.  Government agencies only look at industries with a Skill Level of 1 - 4 when making decisions related to:

  • listing occupations for skilled migration visa programs
  • the apprentice system
  • policies and programs to address skills shortages

We hope that our submission to the ABS puts forward the case that drycleaning should be reclassified to a Skill Level 3 or 4.  We will update you when the ABS release their review next year.
